Types and qualities of gold

Gold has always been one of the world's most admired metals. Its luster, rarity, and symbolic power make it the soul of jewelry. But not all gold is the same: its quality and characteristics vary depending on its purity and alloy with other metals. Understanding these differences is key to choosing with confidence.

What is the purity of gold?

The purity of gold is measured in carats (k), which should not be confused with the carats (ct) used to weigh precious stones.
Pure gold is 24 karat (24k) , which means it contains 100% gold. However, because it is naturally soft and malleable, it is mixed with other metals to make it stronger and more versatile.

In Spain, the most common jewelry is 18k and 14k , both regulated by law.
9k gold is also legally traded, but because it contains less than half the gold, it can oxidize or lose its shine over time.

Gold alloys and colors

Although pure gold is naturally yellow, its color can change when mixed with other metals. This process, called alloying, strengthens it and allows for the creation of different shades.
